SKI TOWN USA EXHIBIT
Exhibit Poster
Famed Norwegian ski-jumper and circus star Carl Howelsen arrived in 1913 and taught the early residents of Steamboat Springs how to ski and jump. Suddenly, the valley’s ranchers were exploring the surrounding mountains on homemade wooden skis, school kids filled recess with downhill races, and locals became expert jumpers. The first Winter Carnival, held in 1914, pitted the local talent against visiting pros. Armed with the local Winter Sports Club, Howelsen Hill, and eventually the Steamboat ski area, Steamboat-grown athletes made a name for themselves at the Olympic Games and other world stages—a tradition that thrives today. Claiming the most Olympians than any other town in the nation, Steamboat Springs is Ski Town USA®.

"With so many elite athletes living, training and coaching here, there is constant inspiration. That is what keeps tradition alive; driving the next generation of skiers to make their own mark on the rich legacy of Ski Town USA.”
